How true. The look really turns people off from wanting to listen. You seem to have a great blog here. I intend to read up on your experience. Cheers.

Hi Ian,

Great post... it reminded me of a recent Wired post about social media and the arrival of "virtual trophy cases": http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/06/st_essay_tweet/

PS- I was at Social Media Day and met the Clear guy!

Right, James. A true network is one in which not every node one touches becomes a winner. That said, every node may lead to something of value, so expectations should be managed as such.

You summed it up well. The concept of "that guy" is central in my conversations with small business owners who are trying to "get sales from Twitter".

My approach is to tell them that Social Media is for developing relationships that you would not have otherwise had a chance to build. If sales come from those relationships, that's great, but the vast majority of your contacts don't become relationships. And the vast majority of your relationships don't become paying customers.

Thanks for posting this. I'll refer my clients to it as a great reference.

Glad you dug it, Martins. I'm a big fan of DropBox, by the way. I read what I could of your post through translation and it's great.
